The Chirano plant supplies power to the Kinross mining concession. in Chirano located in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai district in the Western Region of Ghana. Kinross Gold Corporation is a Canadian mining company. The Chirano plant was designed to be built in two phases. Phase I was a 30.0MW steam turbine plant in an Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle configuration and was commissioned in July 2016 running on LPG. The plant is made up of four gasifier units, four HRSG and one steam turbine generator (“STG”). The uniquely designed plant was primarily fuelled by LPG but also had the infrastructure in place to run on coal and waste-to-fuel materials.

Operations at the plant are currently suspended while expansion plans are being implemented. The capacity expansion plans will bring its configuration in line with the Tarkwa and Damang plants, with two Solar Titan 130 Turbines adding a total installed capacity of 16.5MW.  12 Power Up Jenbacher J320 gas engines 1 MW are also being installed. The current plan is to restart Chirano in July 2023 with the first Solar Titan 130 and the 12 Jenbacher Gas engines. The Jenbacher engines will be subsequently deployed to other sites once the Solar Titan is fully installed and operational at Chirano by October 2023.
